I am inspired by the ocean and being alive at the turn of a millennium. This rare event presents an opportunity for collective reflection on evolution. At this time, visual imagery presented by an ever-more encompassing, technologically driven, and centralized characteristic of a rapidly changing human environment, media continues to focus on confrontation, conflict and dysfunction. My struggle to attain some degree of certainty and sense of continuity in an ever-changing social and built milieu is exacerbated by an emotive reaction to this global media phenomenon. As an artist, I am compelled to explore intrinsic natural form and process in search of tangible harmony. This active pursuit employs the classical techniques of sculpture to interpret a philosophical tradition; the ancient perspective on universalism, cyclic nature and the attainment of equilibrium between opposing forces or systems. Through the nexus of various symbolism such as the lotus flower, fish, dove and moon crescent, a transcendence of the division and alienation that results from this pervasive visual paradigm is implied. Furthermore, the rejuvenating and transformative nature of the surf experience is suggested through dynamic abstract form. The appearance and associated ideas of larger scale works are enhanced through extraordinary illumination, complementary performance art and on- going public participation. |
