Sydney’s most loved park transforms into a spectacular one-day eco-friendly flourish of colour, rhythm and movement for the inaugural Earth Festival 2008.
Festival Director, Paul von Bergen, says Earth Festival 2008 brings people together in appreciation and love of the natural environment and the beautiful place in which we live, with a ‘welcome to country’ ceremony from the traditional owners, the Gadigal people. “Earth Festival 2008 is about celebrating planet earth, connecting with ourselves and our surroundings through music and the arts, while having fun in the process,” he says. “We know that we can inject a lot of fun and creativity into dealing with the serious issues ofclimate change and environmental degradation. There are steps we can all take in our individual daily lives that help to preserve the environment and bring more harmony and connectedness onto the planet,” he says. “When we appreciate the magnificence of the natural environment, we make a greater effort to look after it.” From the ages of three to 103, there’s something for everyone in this positive planetconscious celebration. Artists from every genre – painters, sculptors, photographers, stilt walkers, acrobats, trapeze artists, dancers and musicians - all come together to share their artistry, entertain everyone and build awareness. On the main Festival stage, rhythms and dance beats abound all day with some of Australia’s top performers, including OKA, with their incredible fusion of roots, dub, reggae, jazz and organic electronic and world sounds, The Kahn Brothers, with their Beatle-esque melodies and warmuplifting tones, Kerrianne Cox, one of Australia’s premiere Indigenous artists, with her mix of country, rock and blues and many others including Steve Kilbey, Saritah, The Sniffer Dogs, Matt James, Declan Kelly and Claude Hay. As well as the music featuring on the main Festival stage, buskers will be performing in the Barefoot Bar, a drumming circle invites Festival-goers to join in and there will be a host of roving performers. One Festival highlight is the 360 degree Living Orb, a indoor giant dome which for the first time in Sydney will provide a surround image-and-sound environment for the viewing of nature andscience films plus there will be a huge 10m outdoor movies screen showing the much loved Happy Feet, Blue Planet, Baraka, What About Me and David Attenborough’s incredible Life of Plants. Beautiful luminous candle-lit paper lanterns made by children on the day will transform thesite in a spectacular sunset parade that will weave around the Festival sites, embodying the community’s hopes and ideals for the future of the planet. “For those who love to dance, people can join in or watch performances – the Zip Circus High Wire Trapeze are not to be missed, as is the Brazilian Troupe who will be leading the Festival into the evening with colourful drumming and dance and the Jimbe drumming and West African dance performances,” says von Bergen. In celebration of Earth Festival’s aim to generate environmental awareness through art, there are Earth Prize Awards (to the value of $5000): the Sydney Water Short Film Prize, the Sydney Water Photography Prize & the Banrock Station Art Prize. These awards invite works submitted prior to the Festival and the finalists will be showcased at the Festival. “Art – photography, painting, sculpture - has a unique way of communicating environmental values and articulating the legacy of planet earth. The Awards seek to use artistic creativity to reach out and touch people through short films, paintings, photography and sculpture,” adds von Bergen. What promises to be the biggest group meditation to take place in Australia will also feature on the day. Meditation facilitators at Earth Festival 2008 work by the motto: “We cannot hope to heal the planet until we heal ourselves.” Festival organisers are working to have as many climate-friendly products and practices as possible, reducing energy, resources and create waste products. “We hope to inspire thousands of people to reconnect with nature and live more environmentally friendly lives. Of course, Earth Festival will be carbon neutral, but being environmentally friendly is so much more than just a matter of offsetting,” says von Bergen. “We hope that overall EarthFestival 2008 has a positive effect on planet earth.” He says that as the Festival aims to support threatened species among other environmental concerns, they are donating a percentage of the profits towards the conservation of sharks through support of the Australian Marine Conservation Society. Therefore, in keeping with the spirit of Earth Festival 2008, organisers are urging visitors to travel by bus, train, bicycle or foot to their minimise emissions! WHAT’S ON OFFER AT EARTH FESTIVAL?
